Holiday Gift Guide for the Techie / Photographer

So there’s about two weeks until Christmas and you’re thinking, crap – I still haven’t figured out what to get for my friend/family member/loved one. Well I’m here to save your day and give you a starting place. So here’s my gift to you, loyal followers: a guide to shopping for the techie/photographer.

“I don’t want to spend a lot of money”

You’re thinking well Alex, this person is great and all but I don’t really feel I need to spend a lot of money. That’s ok! I’ve been there and here’s what you need to do:

Lens Caps: ~$5.00 – $10.00 | Here

I’m not sure about you, but I’m constantly losing lens caps. These things are always disappearing or making it through the wash. They’re a cheap and easy gift, (and available on amazon prime).

Portable Power Packs: ~$30.00 | Here

When you’re out on a long day of shooting or traveling for leisure, you’re going to need to charge your batteries. Give yourself peace of mind in knowing you can charge your Iphone a whopping 6 times before needing to worry about finding a plug.

GoPro Hero Backpack Clip: ~$30.00 | Here

If you’re shopping for an individual who already owns a GoPro or you’re planning to buy them a Hero5 (mentioned later on), this backpack mount is a great fit. Give yourself the ability to record/shoot with your hands free.

Amazon Echo Dot: ~$40.00 | Here

Give your buddy an Echo Dot for the holidays because we both know they’ll use it every day, but won’t buy it for themselves. This bluetooth connected smart speaker lets you play music, create lists, check the weather/news, request an Uber or order pizza with the sound of your voice.

FujiFilm INSTAX Mini 8 Camera: ~$60.00 | Here

Relive the good ‘ole days with the Mini 8 polaroid style camera. Snap your candid moments and print them on the spot. This is a fun way to spend the holidays capturing the group all together, don’t forget to post them on the fridge!

Transcend 1TB External Hard Drive: ~$60.00 | Here

If you own a computer, you probably need more storage in your life. Whether you need to back-up your important files or just need to create more space on the ‘ole lappy – this is a rigid hard drive that gives you plenty of space to do so.

Sandisk Extreme Pro Memory Cards: ~$30.00 – $70.00 | Here

Every photographer needs more memory cards. When shopping for memory cards, pay close attention to the MB/s: the higher the number, the faster it performs. And obviously, the higher the GB storage the better!

Peak Design Capture Pro: ~$80.00 | Here

This is a great gift for anybody who carries a camera. You can clip to virtually anything with the peace of mind that it won’t slip on you. I myself carry one on my backpack when shooting and it’s fantastic.

“Ok, I’m not that worried about spending”

So you’ve got some cash burning a hole in your pocket and you really want to see this person’s face light up on Christmas morning. Wonderfull! You’re in the right place, here’s where you need to get started:

Nikon D3300 DSLR Camera: ~$300.00 – $500.00 | Here

If you’re looking for a starter camera, this one is a great place to begin. Nikon has crammed 24.2MP into this crop sensor camera, making it almost as sharp as some of their full frames. While being able to connect wirelessly to your smart phone, shoot 1080 video, and have 11 points of autofocus – it’s a slam dunk for beginners without killing your bank account.

GoPro Hero 5 Black: ~$400.00 | Here

Adventure junkie? Traveler? Youtube vlogger? Go for the newest GoPro on the market, the Hero 5 Black. I personally own the Hero 5 Black and fell in love with its ease of use and versatility. This little guy shoots up to 4K video, 12MP photos, is voice commanded and has a touch screen LCD back display. Oh, and I forgot to mention, it’s waterproof without a case.

Nikon KeyMission 360: ~$500.00 | Here

If you’ve been there done that with the GoPro line-up, then let me introduce you to the KeyMission 360. If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m clearly #TeamNikon (how can you not be?). The KeyMission 360 is the newest gadget on the market that allows you the ability to shoot 360 degrees video. You know those virtual reality headsets everyone’s rocking these days? This is where it comes from! Shoot 4K video, 23.9MP photos and wow your friends and family with stunning content. You’ll be the coolest cat on the block for sure.

DJI Phantom 4 Drone: ~$1,000.00 | Here

DJI is one of the biggest names in the drone industry. They’re one of the first to get it going and seem to be one step ahead of most. The DJI Phantom 4 is the newest in their lineup and provides you  with approx. 28 minutes of flight time. This guy will shoot up to 12.4MP photos and 4K video. Fly your drone indoors knowing it’s smart technology will keep it stable and safe or let it track you outdoors with its GPS capability.

Iphone 7: ~$700.00 / Iphone 7 Plus: ~$900.00 | Here

I myself have the Iphone 7 and I couldn’t be more pleased. The new camera is to-die-for while IOS 10 is a fantastic upgrade with 3D touch. Give this phone a serious look if you need an upgrade.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4: ~$1,000 – $1,800.00 | Here

I’ve had my eye on this guy for many months now. I find it perfect for my photo editing needs while also being a mobile workhorse. I’d recommend splurging on the i7 processor for faster speed and 16GB of RAM if you can do it. Make sure your laptop has a SSD if you’re into running multiple programs at the same time!

I hope you find this list helpful! Happy Holidays to everyone and spoil someone this year, but never forget… it’s a process.
